Multiple studies show the connection between time and frequency of daily reading practice and reading growth.
Events that worked: book fairs and voluntary summer reading study. In one program for low income youth, students could order up to 15 books. They selected books they were interested in. 89% African American. 5% were white. Every year the students who got these books outperformed the control group that did not get the books. In another study, Project READS, students got 10 books over the summer. Had same results. Grades 3-6. 7,000 students involved showed the same gains. It doesn’t take a lot to implement. Even school libraries can be open so students can check out all summer.
The most important thing you can do over the summer is to have your child read.
